I'M BUSY FINISHING some work and blogging will be likely sparse during the rest of the day. Meanwhile, I leave you with this piece by Jonathan Last on historical parallels between the former British and the current American empires. I disagree that the word "empire" accurately describes the US today (peace demonstrators notwithstanding), but the zeitgeist has eerie similarities.

UPDATE. Sorry, I hadn't realized the Philly requires free and relatively simple registration, but registration nevertheless. I guess quite a few of you are already registered or may plan to do so, though.
